Qurbani FAQ's
What is Qurbani?
Qurbani is the act of offering a sacrifice on Eid-al-Adha. It commemorates the
supreme sacrifice offered by prophet Ibrahim (AS) to show his total submission
and gratitude towards Allah (SWT). Once our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said
it is the sunnah of Ibrahim (AS). For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a
reward from Allah (SWT).’ (Hadith - Trimidhi). ‘Udhiyah’ is an Arabic word which
refers to the animal (camel, cattle, goat or sheep) that is sacrificed as an act
of worship to Allah.
What is the difference between Qurbani and Udhiyah?
Essentially, there is no difference between the two terms. Udhiya is an Arabic
word meaning "blood sacrifice", and ‘Qurbani’ is an Urdu and Persian word
derived from the Arabic word "Qurban" which literally means an act performed to
seek Allah’s pleasure. Qurbani is far more popular among the Muslims, but Udhiya
is also used commonly in Middle East.
Why do we sacrifice an animal for Qurbani / Udhiyah?
The Holy Quran informs us that in a vision, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) saw that he
offered his son Isma’eel (AS) in sacrifice to Allah (SWT). When he shared this
vision with his son, Isma’eel (AS) said: "O my father! Do as you are commanded:
you will find me, if Allah so wills, one practising patience and constancy."
However, when Prophet Ibrahim (AS) carried out the commandment, Allah (SWT)
replaced him with a ram. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) mentions the firm faith
and obedience of both father and son as follows: “You have already fulfilled the
vision – thus indeed do We reward those who do right (37:105) Al Quran.
How does the Qurbani’s performed at Islam Freedom?
Since 2009 every year Islam Freedom carrying out Qurbani. Islam Freedom have
arranged the Qurbani programme in Holy Makkah and Indian-subcontinent every
year. Once you select Holy Makkah or Indian-subcontinent and price which is
suitable for you, Islam Freedom will carry out the Qurbani according to your
choice.
Is Qurbani obligatory?
Qurbani is a confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and the Sunnah is
to offer one Qurbani on behalf of one household. There is no certain Nisab to
offer a Qurbani; the only thing which is mentioned by the Muhammad (SAW) is that
a person should be capable financially to afford it. Normally every person in
household, who are eligible to pay Zakat have to give a Qurbani.
What are the days and times for Qurbani?
The days of Qurbani are the tenth, eleventh and twelfth of Dhull Hijjah. The
first day is better than the second, and the second better than the last. In
towns, cities and villages where jumu'ah and 'Eid prayers are performed, Qurbani
is not permissible before the 'Eid Salat. However you can and should order your
Qurbani with Islam Freedom at any time before Eid. We will make sure that the
sacrifice is actually carried out on Eid day itself. It is perfectly permissible
to order your Qurbani before Eid.
Which animals can be sacrificed?
Qurbani animals are goats, sheep, cow and camels. It is necessary that the goat
is one (full) year old, whether male or female. A cow or bull will have to be
two years old, and a camel five years. Animals that are younger are not suitable
for Qurbani. A sheep (of any kind) not less than six months old, so strong and
fat that it appears to be one year old will suffice for Qurbani, otherwise it
will have to be one (full) year old. If an animal seller says that the animal
has reached the required age, and outwardly there is no sign to disprove it,
then it is permissible to rely on his statement. No other type of animals are
allowed for Qurbani. In addition, the animals should be in good health.
Why can’t I choose which animal to sacrifice?
The type of animal availability and local customs play a role in the type of
animal that is actually wanted by the beneficiary. Using a system of units,
Islam Freedom is able to ensure that the meat received by the beneficiary is of
the highest quality and is culturally acceptable.
What happens to the meat of Qurbani sacrifice?
It is recommended that the meat of the Qurbani sacrifice is shared equally in
three parts between (1) the family members of the person performing Qurbani, (2)
his/her relatives and friends and (3) poor people. In developed countries, it is
very difficult to perform Qurbani. Hence, it is permitted to arrange for Qurbani
in a different country on one’s behalf. In this case, the whole Qurbani is
distributed among the poor people. Islam Freedom ensures that Qurbani is
performed in Indian-subcontinent including Bangladesh, Pakistan and India that
Islam Freedom team distributes the meat of the sacrifice to the needy and poor
people.
Where and how are Qurbani shares calculated?
1 Sheep = 1 Qurbani (Holy Makkah)
1 Goat = 1 Qurbani (Indian-Subcontinent)
1/7th of a cow = 1 Qurbani (Indian-Subcontinent)
Full Cow = 7 Qurbani’s (Indian-Subcontinent)
Full Camel = 7 Qurbani’s (Holy Makkah)
Are all the costs included in the price?
Yes, all the various expenses such as the cost of the animal, slaughter,
transportation and distribution are included in the price.
